Rhododendron Dwarf Gertrude Schalle

 

Rhododendron Dwarf Gertrude Schalle. Beautiful evergreen dwarf shrub with foliage that is quite small for a Rhododendron, lance shaped, deep green and held on rigid stout stems. Flowers are produced in early spring at the stem tips in dense clusters. These are funnel shaped, colour is rich scarlet red and waxy in texture. Ideally Suited to the smaller rock garden.

 

 

 

Plant in moist acidic well drained soil in a sheltered site. Partial shade, Hardy.

 

Dead head and do necessary pruning after flowering. Provide a winter mulch.

 

General Rhododendron Planting and care

  • Water the pot thoroughly and allow to drain fully.
  • Dig a hole twice the size of the pot being planted and fork over the base. Adding a bucketful of planting compost.
  • Remove the pot, if the Rhododendron is well rooted cut off the pot.
  • Ensure that the top of the Root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Replace the remaining soil and heel in, water the Rhododendron and area thoroughly
  • Water regular until Rhododendron is established.
  • Apply some general fertiliser every spring.
